Many of you are listening to underground electronic music without even knowing it; walk down Shoreditch high street and you’ll hear a plethora of weird, wacky and wonderful tunes, from the rolling sounds of Neurofunk, to the glitchy sounds of Fidget House, all the way to the other end of the spectrum with sounds of Vocal Trance and Post-Dubstep. Don’t get me wrong; I love a bit of Judge Jules, throw some Pendulum into a set and have the entire room getting their gabba on, but how do producers get to the stage where people cry in joy at the prospect of hearing their song? Obviously you need a good track and need people to find it. Fortunatley that’s what WAYF MAG likes doing, that’s what I like doing. For your enjoyment I’ll attatch links to corresponding pictures, check them out at your leisure and keep an open mind. You cannot fathom the number of times I’ve grown to love a song that I didn’t enjoy first time round. If you’re a producer, take tips from these tracks; you will learn a lot. I mean it takes a lot to please me… Passion, Love, Peace. Michael DJ Immerse

Attitude-driven rapstar and lyricist, Speech Debelle, first hit the music scene in ’07 when tough times forced a rags-to-riches origin upon her and she was signed to urban label; Big Dada records. The future gleamed promising for our Debelle, becoming an instant sensation with her debut album ‘Speech Therapy, which happened to nab the 2009 Mercury Prize on it’s release, trumping such mega-stars as Kasabian and Florence & The Machine. But things quickly took a turn for the worse, and Debelle’s future in music began to slip through her hands, when said album faired poorly in syndication (the worst in Mercury Prize winner history to be precise) and relations began to sour between her and her label, culminating with her departure from Big Dada records. Although Debelle perservered, things went from bad to worse for her career as the public’s fleeting interest reflected gig attendance and she was forced to cancel her attempt to ‘break America’ due to visa issues. The final nail in the coffin of Debelle’s carreer was this: watch?v=oIqHE-_qORU The most literal example of a debacle caught on tape. Ever. For those who didn’t check out the link, it’s a video of Debelle attempting to rap Take That’s ‘Pray’ and ultimately expressing that she thinks Take That are shit. This resulted in mass booing and her ejection from the concert. Over-reaction you say? Oh yeah, this all happened at a take that gig too, so hmmm… Maybe fair. But this depressing story of squandered talent begs one question; “Where is she now?” She may have made a few misguided career moves but jeez her first album got the Mercury Prize, and (the first half of) her story is an inspiration to any young artist. After only learning about her recently, I was shocked to see that nothing had been posted about her on the internet for two years, and sought to change that. So, for any fans of Ms Debelle, or (hopefully) the lady hersef, I ask you to inform her, wherever she is, that the music industry does not judge; and if “artists” like Pete Doherty are still welcome, then so are you.

Very rarely do I encounter a group, from our time, who genuinely push boundaries with their style. Even rarer are those who can do this using manual instruments and not just by turning up the bass oscillation knob in their home studio. This group’s intensity is really felt when listening to their debut track ” No space No Time”, through their Santana-esque percussive bass line which provides a brilliant hypnotic foundation for the spoken vocals of the Shaman looking front man. As a man sick of hearing about ‘Super Bass and Bass Down low” the repeated vocals about the tenets of time and existence are refreshing and inviting, not to mention the dirty fretwork which features, reminding me of a young Mike Einziger (Incubus), this four-piece band bring the live energy of a full drum corp and I honestly look forward to hearing more.
A couple years ago, a Grime collective hailing from Tottenham, North London called Marvell decided to release a free downloadable mixtape entitled “Marvell FM”. They had no street team, no music videos and no Ustream. Since then, a few thousand downloads later, Double S, Vertex and Shocka have now acquired all three of those things as well a huge following nationwide (and a few international fans too). Now, Marvell have done tours with Chipmunk and Diversity, performed at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, collaborated with artists such as Wretch 32 and JME, taken over Westwood TV various times, won awards for best newcomer and best video at the OMAs, had their single reach the number one spot on the MTV Base music chart and arguably created their own unique genre of music. Following Marvell FM, we heard Marvell FM 2, then Marvell FM 3, and now last month Marvell FM 4 has been released. The mixtapes usually consist of the boys dropping fancy yet powerful lyrics over various types of instrumentals. Everything from original beats by producers such as SX and Dot Rotten, to known instrumentals from songs by Jason Derulo, Drake and Sidney Samson. Marvell FM 4 follows tradition in that sense but also comes through almost bigger than its being let off to be. Take away the fact that some of the instrumentals used are not theirs and you have a mixtape which has the quality of an album. It’s highly generous that it’s being given away for free, but I like that. Keeping the fans happy. When the EP or album does officially come out those same fans will be happy to spend cash. I know I will. Marvell as a group in general are definitely one to watch and listen too. The crew is full of talent. All members deliver some of the best punchlines and wordplay you’ll ever hear. The overall lyrical content is impactful and diverse. They know how to be humorous and they know how to tell serious stories. Previous hits such as “Make Noise”, “Marvell Music” and “We Know” still get played on repeat by various Marvell fans. Add that to the fact that we have Vertex actually taking time out to direct music videos for other artists and the fact that the crew have a clothing line out in conjunction with Abuze London, not to mention Shocka’s hilarious skits on the FM mixtapes and Double S’s harmonies on the hooks, the future is definitely looking bright for the young stars. Marvell FM 4 features collabs with Chipmunk, Lady Leshurr and Sneakbo just to name a few as well as vocals over instrumentals by Wiz Khalifa, the Black Eyed Peas and the notorious “We No Speak Americano” instrumental by Yolanda Be Cool and DCUP. It’s available now at www.marvellmusic.co.uk. Thousands have already hit that download button, do the same if you haven’t already. You shan’t be disappointed.

I’ll begin this plea on the assumption that you don’t get your news from a reliable, informative tabloid that respects the intelligence of it’s followers- because, lets be honest, they don’t exist. I say this because, for the past month or so, everything I have read or been subjected to on TV has indicated less ‘Global Information Service’ and more ‘ Charlie-Sheencast.’ And from the opinions I’ve heard, I’m starting to get the impression Sheen is practically the next Hitler. And here’s why that’s messed up. Yes, it’s true, Sheen enjoys the occasional indulgence of mind altering substances (Or in his words ‘banging 7 gram rocks.’) But I do not need to point out that this is Hollywood, a town where if the creative minds aren’t under the influence, then the audience most certainly will need to be. And, yes it’s also true, Sheen is a father of five- Of course, for most people this is where my Hollywood logic falls flat and concerned-parenting flags are raised. But let’s make one thing clear (in neither encouragement or deterrence) paternal competence is not on a sliding scale with drug abuse. Any truly devoted father could handle the two exclusively, and in my (widely regarded) opinion, half of the incompetent parents out there who have never touched drugs, need to start soon. The above video is of an (in)famous interview from Good Morning America, in which a MILF on a pedestal grills Sheen about his recent behaviour. At one point, she even goes as far as to mention a hooker who ‘feared she might overdose.’ To which Sheen wittily retorts ‘So what?’ Shocking? Heartless? Erratic? No. Not at all. Honest. This is not Sheen confessing his disregard for human life; it’s actually Sheen confessing his disregard for one-time hookers that willingly take more of his drugs than they can handle. If you get past his ‘Adonis’-esque demure and claims of taking more drugs than any man can survive, and actually pay attention, he’s really saying that when he used, he used well. And that he doesn’t dance with fate, he knows his limits and he hits them with a smile. It really seems to me that Charlie’s words just don’t do him any favours, whether it’s his back-catalogue of high-grossing movies or just a reaction to the (bafflingly) positive reviews of ‘Two and a Half men’ which has caused it, he IS under the impression he is better than us and likes to express it. But hypocrisy reigns in the land of reporters and the backlash of dirty-looks and unwarranted opinions upon horses-high has been more than enough to really call to amnesty. In summary, this is not my place. And it is not your place. It’s really not even news. In a world where horrific injustice and tragedy makes its name every 4 seconds, Charlie f**king Sheen’s coke habit is really the least of our worries, so give him a break. Thank you.

Let’s face it, the once great parenting substitute known as television is clinging on to dear life by a thread, and if you’ve seen one episode of the Channel 4 News – you’ve seen ‘em all. With the ‘Great TV Show/ Crap Advert’ ratio having shifted slowly but surely over the years, the faith of the viewing masses has just as surely diminished. But all is most definitely not lost. As my good deed for the decade, I’ve compiled a list of 5 faith restoring-come-ground breaking series which I think are worth sitting through the commercial break for. (Before we start, I’d like to clear up, these are not just a list of my favourite shows, they have all been featured due to their unfairly low ratings share.) 1. Community Despite not being the best show featured on this list, it is by a long shot the most uniquely presented. NBC’s ‘Community’ centres around the life of disgraced lawyer Jeff Winger as he re-attends a community college in order to legitimise his Law degree. Though this proves to be more frustrating than expected for the cynical Jeff, as a cast of insufferable yet lovable classmates insist on befriending him. The unconditional love that blossoms between Jeff and his friends sets the heart warming tone for the show whilst the faculty of recognisable comedic faces makes for some side splitting ‘head meets desk’ comedy. Although, this sounds like a rather standard synopsis, what pushes Dan Harmon’s sitcom up to a level of genius is ‘Abed’, Jeff’s sidekick; who is less of a character and more of a tool for ultimate meta, as it’s assumed he alone knows the rest of the cast are actually in a Tv show. This allows community to parody and subvert tired Tv tropes and cliche’s openly and cleverly without veering from the overall point of the series. Also Chevy Chase’s return to (decent) comedy is a refreshing addition to the show. 2. The American Office For me to bother describing the Office to you, would be for me to assume that you, the reader, has never turned on a TV. Although, living in Britain, it feels like we as a TV nation are still sailing on the high we got from Gervais and Merchant’s masterpiece, without fully acknowledging it’s Yankee counterpart. To put the extent of the detailed stories and expanded character-arcs into context, the BBC version featured 14 episodes whereas the NBC version is now hitting it’s 145th and counting. In my (highly valued) opinion, with the exception of a few tangents, The American Office has only improved in it’s run, delivering painfully cringe-worthy Michael Scott moments and Dwight/Jim conflicts that make you feel like you too have served Dunder-Mifflin for years. Characters like Gareth Keenan, Tim and of course David Brent will always hold a very special place in any fan’s heart, but none can argue that sticking out the American version will inadvertently find you internally disputing which Mid-Level Paper Merchant you love...

(Before we start, I’d like to clear up, these are not just a list of my favourite shows, they have all been featured due to their unfairly low ratings share.)

1. Community

Despite not being the best show featured on this list, it is by a long shot the most uniquely presented.

2. The American Office

For me to bother describing the Office to you, would be for me to assume that you, the reader, has never turned on a TV.
Characters like Gareth Keenan, Tim and of course David Brent will always hold a very special place in any fan’s heart, but none can argue that sticking out the American version will inadvertently find you internally disputing which Mid-Level Paper Merchant you love more.

3. Modern Family

ABC’s unlikely smash-hit is a stylish mockumentary portraying the day-to-day of three nuclear families and their familiar dysfunctions. Showcasing such issues as gay marriage, divorce, step-families, adoption and downright remarkable parenting from the shows father; Phil. A landmark in my books as the best representation of a realistic family since Malcolm in the Middle, Modern Family has enough charm, intertextuality and laughs per minute to make it unmissable.

4. Arrested Development

Without a doubt the most ground breaking television series of the 21st century. With it’s all-star cast, Arrested Development is simply the best TV show you never saw. Plagued by marketing nightmares and poor ratings due to scheduling issues, the show faced adversity from the hands of Network execs and gained only a cult following during it’s syndication. Despite it’s struggle, after it’s death it received nothing but outstanding reviews from critics and comedians worldwide, winning several Emmys and the top spot of IMDB’s Greatest shows of the 2000′s.

The show follows Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman), the son of a corrupt housing executive, who each episode struggles to keep his eccentric family together as their patriarch is jailed for ‘Light Treason’.

5.It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Arguably the home-grown cult phenomenon of the decade, Charlie Day’s alternative sitcom is a breath of fresh air for the complete bastard in all of us. Dealing (hilariously) with such concepts as abortion, racism, cannibalism, murder, incest, invincibility, rape, deceit and habitual glue huffing, ‘The Gang’ come across as the ultimate misanthropic triple-threat.

Focussing on the employees of a seedy Irish Pub in Philly, doing any work is usually the last thing mentioned, between the characters convoluted schemes to backhand each other and make money unconventionally, a genuine attachment strengthens every episode and quickly grows more addictive than sniffing Elmer’s glue.

Created entirely by it’s sublime cast, this show constantly pushes boundaries and very rarely disappoints.

Before I get into this preview first I want to get one thing out of the way…. yes this film is very similar to Kick Ass but don’t let that put you off. While there is a big similarity with Super and Kick Ass in the form of average people attempting to become super heroes but that seems to be about it. Super Stars Rainn Wilson (The Office US, Transformers 2) as middle aged man Frank D’Arbo whose wife leaves him for the Local drug boss (Kevin Bacon) which proves to be the turning point which leads to Frank deciding to become DYI Super Hero The Crimson Bolt. Armed with a crimson wrench frank makes it his mission to fight crime and take down the drug dealer who stole his wife. Super looks to be genuinely funny and entertaining, with a budget of only $2m the real strong point of this movie is definitely the writing with one of my favourite lines coming from when Crimson Bolt smacks a paedophile in the head with his wrench and says “don’t molest children. Super is scheduled for release in the US on the 1st of April 2011 with no UK release date announced as yet. Hopefully we won’t have to long to see Super in UK theatres or I may have to get a wrench of my own and take it to Super’s distributors IFC and carry out some justice of my own.
